Jul 24, 2010 I recently purchased a Mackie Onyx 1220 mixer with Firewire interface card. When I plug this into my iMac (via 6-pin/9-pin cable), the Onyx shows up in the sound settings applet and is set as the default output device. But if I try to play any audio, or change any of the Onyx settings (e.g. Bitrate), I get the spinning beachball.

I know this post has nothing to do with the Moog Sub 37, but it’s about a problem that nagged me for a while and that kept me from updating my studio computer to OS X El Capitan: The lack of driver Mackie Onyx support for the latest versions of OS X.
It’s a shame, the Onyx (I have the 1620i) is a really cool mixer that sounds good and gives me a lot of freedom when recording sessions or producing something on my own. For some reason Mackie doesn’t seem to be willing to spend the money to have their drivers certified by Apple. Until OS X Mavericks the Onyx would work fine, then after updating to OS X Yosemite, it wouldn’t be recognized by the system anymore.

And I can't seem to find out where/how to download these drivers andneither can my computer.Running Windows 10 with a Nvida GeForce GTX 1060 with all the latest drivers on everything else.Here are the codes I get in device manager under hardware:PCI: PCIVEN8086&DEVA324&SUBSYS86941043&REV10SM Bus Controller: PCIVEN8086&DEVA323&SUBSYS86941043&REV10Another thing to note is that this issue has not affected my performance at all and is just a small problem I'd like to get out of the way.Thank you. https://ritebrown.amebaownd.com/posts/15931685. I recently bought a new desktop, and everything's been running fine, except I noticed this issue:Upon going into my devices and printers, there's a little troubleshooting triangle next to my desktop's symbol, so I troubleshooted it, told me PCI and SM Bus Controller had no drivers.

For OS X Yosemite, the fix was easy:

Open the Terminal
Type:
Press Enter
Reboot the computer

This would disable the Signed Kernel Extension mode of OS X and allow the driver to be loaded again.

But after an update to OS X El Capitan, however, the mixer would again stop working and not be recognized by the system. It turns out, disabling the Signed Kernel Extension mode like described above is not possible anymore in El Capitan. Very frustrating. Thankfully, a discussion on Reddit brought me a working solution (successfully tested on a MacBook Pro).

For OS X El Capitan, the fix is:

Reboot the computer
When the boot sound is heard, press and hold CMD+R to enter recovery mode
After booting the recovery mode is finished, open the Terminal from the menu
Type:
Press Enter
Reboot the computer
Disable Signed Kernel Extenstion mode, using the steps described above
Install the Mackie Onyx drivers (reboot when the installer tells you to)
Connect the Onyx to the computer and test if it works (it should now)
